We can establish a story line entitled “Trump Twitter Lie of the Day.” Trump lied again, about the same thing, twice. First there is this Tweet.
Then Trump doubled down on it by repeating it from his official POTUS account.
The 122 number came from a Fox News report and within half an hour Trump, who can’t be bothered with confirming anything, just could not control his 12 year old level impatience and Tweet it to the world. The Fox News Report did indeed correctly say a national intelligence report confirms 122 former Gitmo detainees returned to the battlefield.
But Trump added something to his Tweets that the Fox Report did not say. Trump added that the 122 former detainees were “released by the Obama Administration.” That statement is a flat out lie, there is no other way to characterize it. In fact, the vast bulk of those 122 were released by the Bush Administration.
To be precise, the same national security report that is the source of that 122 number says 113 of those (that’s 93%) were released by the Bush Administration. Trump also failed to inform the people that 30 of those 122 are dead and another 25 are now in custody.
Just for the record, the report also indicates another 86 are also suspected of reengaging as terrorists, 75 of those (or 87%) released by the Bush Administration. Trump’s Twitter account remains the most widely distributed source of fake news in the nation.
