Everyday Quotable Movie (and TV) Lines.

Hollywood has invaded everyday conversation in our home. We find ourselves repeatedly communicating to each other with lines borrowed from movies and television. They are surprisingly handy, provide immediate context (because of their use in the movie or TV series) and are fun because they remind us of the show. The lines are generally delivered in manner imitating how they were delivered in the show, adding to the fun.

I have compiled some of our favorites. Of course, this is as much a commentary what kind of movies we like as anything else. Feel free to comment and add your own from your dealings with your family.

That’s not a good sound.” — Doctor Horrible’s Sing-a-Long blog.

Balls!” — Doctor Horrible’s Sing-a-Long blog.

A Man’s gotta do what a man has gotta do.” Doctor Horrible’s Sing-a-Long blog.” [note: this one must be said singing, like this]:

I remember it differently.” — Dr. Horrible’s Sing-a-Long blog.

The world is a mess and I just need to rule it.” — Doctor Horrible’s Sing-a-Long blog.

The status quo is not quo.” — Doctor Horrible’s Sing-a-Long blog.

What did you do Ray?” — Ghostbusters.

Important safety tip.” — Ghostbusters.

Agile little minx.” — Ghostbusters.

And then depression set in.” — Stripes.

Army training sir.” — Stripes. [note: must be said like Bill Murray says it here]:

Lighten up Francis.” — Stripes.

Phone home” — ET [must be said in ET’s voice] Also true for “ouch.”

It’s not my fault.” — Star Wars.

I know.” — Star Wars [must be said cool, reflecting acknowledgement of a statement of the obvious, like Hans Solo]:

There is no try.” — Star Wars.

This is why you fail.” — Star Wars.

Make it so.” — Star Trek the Next Generation. [generally accompanied with Pickard’s forward thrusting hand gesture, like so]:

Likewise for “Engage.”

He’s dead Jim.” — The Original Star Trek.

Is there air? You don’t know.” — Galaxy Quest.

Never give up, never surrender!” — Galaxy Quest.

That’s what I do, I drink and I know things.” — Game of Thrones.

There’s no place like home.” — The Wizard of Oz.

We’re not in Kansas anymore.” — The Wizard of Oz.

And your little dog too.” — The Wizard of Oz. [must be said in fashion of Wicked Witch].

Silence whippersnapper.” — The Wizard of Oz. [must be said in the manner of the Wizard]:

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.” — The Princess Bride.

Inconceivable!” — The Princess Bride. [Once again must be said in the incredulous fashion of the character].

As you wish.” — The Princess Bride.

I know something you don’t know.” — The Princess Bride [generally said while making sword fighting motions].

It’s the end of the world.” To which all present respond “Again?!” — Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Oh how very prompt.” — Mary Poppins

I’ll add more as I am reminded of them by me or my family using them again in ordinary conversation.
