Playing Political Football With Trump: One Team Keeps Moving the Goalposts.
With regards to Russia the American people are being treated to creeping re-definitions of fake news as Trump moves the goalposts in incremental steps. Trump first labeled the whole notion that Russia interfered in our election “fake news.” In time, claiming that would require Trump to defy his own entire intelligence community.
So Trump moved the goalposts, asserting any notion of anyone on his team talking with Russians during the campaign was “fake news.” Then General Flynn was caught red handed doing exactly that, (with the timing of the communications very suspicious), and had to resign for lying to the Vice President of the United States about it.
The goalposts moved to continued claims that any coordination or collusion by the Trump campaign with the Russians was “fake news.” Then FBI Director Comey testified before Congress that the FBI is investigating precisely that question.
We now find ourselves in a swirl of Presidential misdirection as Trump tries to divert attention and muddy the waters by fabricating claims his phones were tapped (they weren’t, but more and move evidence is suggesting they should have been) and blowing irrelevant smoke about Hillary Clinton’s supposed Russian contacts.
Even in regards to the allegations regarding Hillary Clinton, Trump moves the goalposts. Trump and Flynn repeatedly claimed seeking testimonial immunity proved guilt, but now both support the supposed necessity of Flynn getting that immunity.
There is an old joke about a three step process to invoke when caught in misconduct:
- Admit nothing.
- Deny everything.
- Make counter accusations.
Trump’s smoke blowing about about Obama wiretapping his phones and about Hillary Clinton shows Trump has certainly advanced deep into Stage 3. Trump is trying to present himself as the victim, and he is not. Our democracy is the victim. As Dave Pell has written, this is not witch hunting, it has become a matter of which hunting as we attempt to determine not whether Trump is guilty, but rather what he is guilty of.
Dear Mr. President Trump, we don’t give a tinkers damn about Hillary Clinton. She is not, and will not ever be, our President. You are, and your potential disloyalty to this country is the problem the people of this nation must demand be addressed.
