The Bowling Green Massacre Redux (Swedish Version).

When propping up your Presidency is based on demagogic fear mongering, and no terrorist attacks occur, the solution is to make them up. When you rely on fear and suspicion of an unpopular group to sustain your own popularity you must provide a constant source of fuel for such fuel and suspicion. Trump’s Wormtongue, Kellyanne Conway, previously fabricated the “alternative news” of the non-existent Bowling Green Massacre, inspiring this author to multiple rounds of alternative poetry, from Shakespeare to Flanders Fields to Lord Tennyson.

This time the invented Muslim atrocity was announced by President Trump himself at his “campaign rally” in Florida on Saturday. The President suggested to this adoring crowd that a refugee induced atrocity happened in Sweden the night before. Here’s what the man who is obsessed with attacking “fake news” said:

“Look at what’s happening in Germany, you look at what’s happening last night in Sweden, Sweden?! Who would believe this? Sweden!”

You can watch it for yourself here:

So here’s the thing, nothing of note involving refugees happened in Sweden the night before. Nothing. Whatever this atrocity was supposed to be, there was none.

What our President, who claims to be well briefed on security matters, apparently did was watch a Fox News report that aired the night before that generally discussed crimes committed by refugees and thought it was about specific incidents that night. As anyone watching the report can see, it clearly was not.

A confused and dishonest President continues to try and fake his way through a Presidency. It is either that or the dishonest fear mongering of a demagogue (or both). I do not think he can keep up the charade for four more years. I just hope the frenzy of hate he tries to whip up with his lies does not bring us all down on each other.

In the meantime, Donald Trump and his administration continue to be the most widely spread source of fake news in this country. Trump has shown again, that for him there is no lie that is too small or too stupid, to be beyond the reach of his dishonesty.
