Trump Calls Himself A Liar.

Suggests The Access Hollywood Tape He Said Was Real Is Fake.

One of the defining moments in the 2016 election cycle was hearing the future President of the United States of America describe himself as a pussy grabber. The shocking Access Hollywood video featured a recorded Donald Trump talking to Access Hollywood host Billy Bush as they shared demeaning sexually charged comments about women generally and Bush’s co-host Nancy O’Dell specifically. The conversation remains as shocking as the fact that this man is now the nuclear armed leader of the free world.

The tape has been in the news again lately in the context of sexual harassment and assault allegations raging from Hollywood to the nations capitol and touching everyone from Democratic Senator Al Franken to Republican uber-family values candidate Roy Moore. Notwithstanding credible allegations of sexually assaulting a minor, attempted rape and generally creepy predatory behavior of teen girls by a middle aged man, Trump has endorsed Roy Moore by attacking his opponent. Stuff like this:

This has led to many bringing up the numerous women accusing Trump of groping and even rape. There is Trump’s bizarre bragging on the Howard Stern show about abusing his power as beauty pageant host to ogle naked teen girls. Of course, the Access Hollywood tape became Exhibit A. Many quite reasonably view this a case of one sexual assaulter supporting another.

Trump’s solution is to now raise doubts as to the authenticity of the Access Hollywood tapes. As reported in a New York Times article explaining why Trump is continuing to support Moore:

He sees the calls for Mr. Moore to step aside as a version of the response to the now-famous ‘Access Hollywood’ tape, in which he boasted about grabbing women’s genitalia, and the flood of groping accusations against him that followed soon after. He suggested to a senator earlier this year that it was not authentic, and repeated that claim to an adviser more recently.

There are so many problems with Trump suggesting the Access Hollywood tape is fake. Let’s start with Trump flat out admitting it was true last year when it happened. There can be nothing more direct than this:

I said it, I was wrong, and I apologize. — Donald Trump

He said this on a video he posted to his own Facebook account.

When asked about it during a debate against Hillary Clinton he invoked the notorious “locker room defense” while still admitting he said it.

this was locker room talk. I’m not proud of it. I apologize to my family. I apologize to the American people. Certainly I’m not proud of it. But this is locker room talk . . . It was locker room talk, as I told you. That was locker room talk. I’m not proud of it. I am a person who has great respect for people, for my family, for the people of this country. And certainly, I’m not proud of it. But that was something that happened. — Donald Trump.

This was noteworthy because it was the only time Trump ever apologized for anything in the entire election. He never apologized for his numerous incredible lies or hateful comments and actions that included mocking a handicapped reporter. So this was a really big deal. Now Trump tries to say he didn’t mean it? Wow.

Another major flaw in the President’s suggestion the tape is faked is there is a witness. He said it to Billy Bush. Bush also admitted it happened and apologized saying: “ “Obviously I’m embarrassed and ashamed. It’s no excuse, but this happened eleven years ago. I was younger, less mature, and acted foolishly in playing along. I’m very sorry.” He was fired anyway as NBC held him more accountable than Trump voters did the future President of the United States.

This President often sees a reality that is simply not real. He did it again recently with his widely lampooned claim that Time Magazine called him to offer Man of the Year but he turned them down. His absurd, and often paranoid, conspiracy theories from Birtherism, to Ebola, to vaccines, to Ted Cruz’s father killing JFK, to Obama wiretapped him have shown he is simply not well connected to reality.

This effort to undo the past, including his own past words, to cast doubt on the Access Hollywood tape shows Trump denying his own version of reality. Trump is attempting to redefine a history he previously defined. He is not just defining a different reality, he is redefining his own reality.

Which brings us back to what should be the central concern of every American. A President not connected to reality is not funny. The President of the United States is not mentally well. He is not mentally stable or fit to serve. Reality and facts are constantly malleable to him, even those he personally cast in stone.

Responsible people should act to remove him from office before the damage to this nation is irreparable from his acting on one of his reality warping and ever more whimsical beliefs.

The question is, are there still enough responsible Republicans?
