Trump vs. Hurricanes vs. Trump
Trump continues to contradict and make a fool of himself. Yesterday when asked about the Hurricanes Harvey and Irma evidencing climate change he dismissed it saying:
“we’ve had bigger storms than this.” — President Trump
Okay, fair enough. It’s arguably true, though it should be noted that Hurricane Irma set various all time records for size and intensity. These all time records include length of time as a Category 5 hurricane and length of time for any hurricane with 185 or above mph winds. Irma’s 185 mph winds tied for third with only hurricanes Patricia and Allen exceeding it. Harvey will likely be the most costly storm in American history and also set an all time record for rain dumped on the United States from one hurricane.
Irma and Harvey also represent the first time in American history two Category 4 storms made landfall in the United States in one year. So while we may, by some other measures, have had “bigger storms than this” we have never had two this big in one year, a year where hurricane season is not even close to over. These two storms are a unique event in that regards, already.
But here’s the thing, this “we’ve had bigger storms” to debunk climate change, while a defensible statement alone, contradicts Trump’s own repeated declarations about these storms. Here are some other quotes about Hurricane Irma from our President:
”Hurricane Irma is of epic proportion, perhaps bigger than we have ever seen.”
“Hurricane looks like largest ever recorded in the Atlantic!”
“the people of Florida experienced something the likes of which we can say really say nobody’s ever seen before.”
“They’ve never seen a category like this come in because it came in really at a five.”
To top it off, yesterday Trump came across as profoundly ignorant, admitting that before before these storms:
“I never even knew a Category 5 existed.” — President Trump
I mean, damn, this is our President people. This may sound like parody, but he really did say this. He is really this degree of clueless. How can this man possibly inform us on whether there have been worse storms before?
He also said Irma actually hit the Florida Keys as a Cat 5, which simply is not true. It hit as a Cat 4 which is bad enough to be sure, it requires no hyperbole from a dishonest President.
Unconscionable stupidity, inconsistency and dishonesty combine in our President who is making policy related to climate change.
