Much remains shrouded in mystery regarding potential links between the Trump campaign and computer hacks and related leaks of the DNC. We know that Trump labelled all the allegations of potential collusion between his campaign and the Russians as “fake news.”
We know Trump’s fake news allegation was destroyed on March 20th when FBI Director Comey testified to Congress that:
I have been authorized by the Department of Justice to confirm that the FBI, as part of our counterintelligence mission, is investigating the Russian government’s efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election and that includes investigating the nature of any links between individuals associated with the Trump campaign and the Russian government and whether there was any coordination between the campaign and Russia’s efforts. As with any counterintelligence investigation, this will also include an assessment of whether any crimes were committed.
We know this investigation is not complete and continues as on May 3d, FBI Director Comey again testified to Congress saying: “We’re conducting an investigation to understand whether there was any coordination between the Russian efforts and anybody associated with the Trump campaign.” Comey refused to divulge any details as to the status or targets of the investigation.
However, there is more we know from reports in the media. We know President Trump hired a man (General Flynn) without proper security vetting and retained him for nearly a month in a highly sensitive position even after the FBI told the administration he was a security risk because he could be blackmailed by the Russians. We know the timing of Flynn’s contacts with Russians is very suspicious and I know Flynn flat out lied about those contacts. The timing and lies strongly supports coordination. We know Flynn is seeking immunity for any testimony he provides even after Flynn and Trump condemned Clinton aides for seeking immunity suggesting it was proof of guilt. We know Flynn received large payments from Russians (despite being advised to not take such money) and that he did not disclose those payments despite being advised to do so.
We also know that Trump’s one time campaign director, Paul Manafort had extensive connections with Russians that he also lied about. We know this former campaign chairman for Trump is under an active criminal investigation for his connections and transactions with Russians.
We know former Trump foreign policy advisor Carter Page was the subject of a FISA warrant. We know such a warrant requires that a Federal judge conclude there is probable cause that Carter was knowingly assisting a foreign power against the United States.
We know serial liar, and former Trump advisor Roger Stone, appears to have predicted in advance one of the Clinton related email releases. It’s difficult to explain such a prediction absent collusion with the Russians. We further know that Roger Stone has admitted to having contacts with “Guccifer 2.0” who is in turn known to actually be the same Russian intelligence known to be behind the DNC hack.
According to FBI Director Comey the investigation is not complete. Trump’s efforts to cover up the potential Russian ties by labelling it as “fake news” spewed by a media that is “the enemy of the people” is as disturbing a fact as any other in this matter. It’s not “fake news.” It is the subject of what is now a protracted FBI investigation.
