Why I Was Disappointed In J6 Committee Criminal Referal

Overall, I was disappointed after reading the report, which can be found HERE. We knew about the charges against Trump in advance. I thought the real revelations would be who the committee named as coconspirators. That didn’t happen.

Instead the Committee named only Eastman, adding nothing new to the decision by Judge Carter that Eastman and Trump committed § 371 and § 1512 violations. Beyond that the Committee only vaguely suggested “others” might also be guilty of crimes. For me the most interesting part was going to be the “who” in those “others” and the Committee stayed silent on that.

No members of Congress were the subject of a criminal referral. A half dozen were referred to the House Ethics Committee where nothing will be done in the Republican controlled House. That part of the report is a Nothing Burger.

The Committee mentions that “Trump purposely verified false information filed in Federal court.” I believe Committee is referring to the issue I discuss in this article where a judge effectively accused Trump of perjury and his lawyers of conspiring with him to suborn that perjury. However, that is not among the specific referrals against Trump.

Yes, the referral of a former President by Congress to the DOJ for criminal investigation is a major historical milestone. Even so, I was disappointed by today’s report that did not go beyond what we already knew was going to happen.
