Wow. As others have suggested you write passionately and well. I just wish your message was more inclusive and less supportive of racism.
I don’t know where to start in addressing your rant against white anti-racist activism. I guess a start is a simple question. Where do you want whites to stand on the issue of racism? What do you want us to do? Because if you are to browbeat them for trying to stand with you the natural reaction is to stand against you. Surely you don’t want that. I don’t want that.
Can you imagine how your words would sound if uttered by a white person speaking of blacks? Let’s just imagine Richard Spencer of (“heil Trump” fame) saying something like this (I will bold where I change your words from “white” to “black”):
It was a bad idea, and like most bad ideas, I blame black people. Specifically, I blame the room full of black writers, producers, directors, and executives who greenlit this doomed disappointment from the start. And this isn’t the first time a room full of black people has let me down . . . All of these bad ideas started with a bunch of black folks sitting around a table being extra white. If history has taught me anything, it’s that there’s nothing more disappointing or dangerous than a room full of black people. With that in mind, I’d like you to consider why anyone would expect black-led anti-racism organizations to be any different.
Sounds awful, doesn’t it? It really doesn’t sound better no matter what color you put in, including “white.” White people have no monopoly on evil or virtue. Nobody does. That’s the point.
Ask yourself this question. How far removed is your post from Martin Luther King’s dream “that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.” You judge the white people you criticize not by the content of their character, but rather because they are white.
In a time when many whites realize the dangers of having a racist demagogue as our President, you preach of a message pushing them away. Such divisive messages only serve the cause of people like him. Reaching out and embracing all those who oppose the open racism of our President is a far better course than belittling them. We have him for that.
